1940s Korean Vintage Wallpaper — Jaeho (original)

Jaeho was discovered in an abandoned house within Gyodong Eupseong Fortress on Gyodongdo Island — in 1943, a key Yellow Sea node of the Japanese Yen Bloc economy. Its Victorian encaustic tile grid structure and Majolica-inspired beading detail speak the language of colonial-era material aspiration; its rounded acanthus ornament echoes the Shanghai yuefenpai poster aesthetic.

When GOSATE removed the backing paper, a 1943 Maeil Sinbo newspaper was found beneath — its headline reading “Carrying the Passion of the Continent,” above a photograph of Korean youth departing for Manchurian conscription. The luxury surface and the wartime document, pressed together for eighty years.

GOSATE’s reproduction digitally restores the deep teal ink and craquelure ground texture of the 1943 original, printed on premium non-woven base paper manufactured in Sweden.
