1950s Korean Vintage Wallpaper — Sunyung (original / Light Daffodil)

Sunyung was discovered in a hanok in Hwado-myeon, Ganghwa Island, and dates to the period immediately following Korea’s liberation in 1945 — the years of material shortage and social reconstruction before and during the Korean War. Its structure is a frameless all-over: small chrysanthemum-type flowers with radially spreading petals repeat continuously, connected by fine continuous vines with no grid, medallion, or any classical structural skeleton. From a distance it reads as a textile surface, almost like fine lace. Up close, the wire-line drawing — thin, consistent, industrial in origin — has the loose, generous quality of brushwork on Korean folk ceramics or minhwa vine painting, with gaps between the vines that a Japanese karakusa all-over would never permit. The color scheme is absolute economy: black and red, two inks only. Black lines build the entire structure; red settles onto the flower petals alone, placing warm points of color across the surface. The raw yellow-toned pulp paper is the third color, unprinted and unashamed. This was not a design choice from abundance — the departure of Japanese technical staff, the collapse of supply chains, and the scarcity of materials after liberation forced Korean manufacturers into radical reduction. What they reached for instead was the visual language most familiar and psychologically comforting to Korean people: the minhwa tradition of folk painting, where line rhythm matters more than tonal complexity and a modest flower carries the weight of a household prayer. The result is a wallpaper that belongs formally to the lineage of Western trailing floral and the US-period ditsy floral, and emotionally to something entirely its own.
