1960s Korean Vintage Wallpaper — Sunok (original / chelsea garden)
Sangcheol was discovered in a 1960s hanok in Hwado-myeon, Ganghwa Island. Each repeat unit is structured like a miniature folding screen: a cloud-shaped cartouche — referencing both the painted byeongpung tradition and the sliding jangjimun door of the Korean interior — frames a crane on pine above a blooming peony.
This is the classic Korean triad of longevity, nobility, and prosperity, translated from a hand-painted singular composition into a repeating all-over wallpaper pattern. The result is a wall that carries the weight of traditional auspicious iconography in the grammar of modern interior decoration.
GOSATE’s reproduction digitally restores the sage green and warm ink palette of the original, preserving the cloud cartouche outline that gives each unit its distinctive organic boundary. Printed on premium non-woven base paper manufactured in Sweden.
