world. Patterned wallpapers, especially those rich in color and ornament, have a long history that reaches back to the Joseon period. Yet in modern Korea, this once-vivid culture of decorative wallcovering has largely disappeared from daily life, and remains almost entirely unstudied.<\/p>\n      <p>GOSAT\u00c9 is a wallpaper brand born from <span class=\"gs-mark\">BAEMUI<\/span>, a company dedicated to documenting, researching, and restoring Korea\u2019s disappearing architectural heritage. We archive and study Korea\u2019s forgotten interior tradition of <span class=\"gs-mark\">dobaeji<\/span>, then reproduce those findings as wallpapers, fabrics, and other objects that can be used in contemporary spaces. In doing so, GOSAT\u00c9 becomes a bridge between a vanishing culture of interior decoration and the lives we inhabit today.<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/section>\n\n  <section class=\"gs-sec\" id=\"gs-c3\">\n    <div class=\"gs-meta\"><span class=\"gs-num\">02<\/span>Gosat\u00e9<\/div>\n    <div>\n      <h2>The Time Layers of Old Houses<span class=\"gs-latin\">From an Alley Called \uace0\uc0c5 (Gosat)<\/span><\/h2>\n      <p><span class=\"gs-mark\">GOSAT\u00c9<\/span> takes its name from <span class=\"gs-mark\">\uace0\uc0c5 (gosat)<\/span>, a pure Korean word meaning a narrow village lane or alley. Through BAEMUI\u2019s work documenting and restoring Korea\u2019s disappearing architectural heritage, we encountered layers of aged wallpaper hidden inside old houses at the ends of these alleys. Within those strata, we discovered the everyday aesthetics of Korean life.<\/p>\n      <p>Old wallpaper is not merely a disposable surface. It is one of the most intimate records of a generation\u2019s taste and way of life, preserving the traces of ordinary people with remarkable clarity. GOSAT\u00c9 seeks to carry the warm memories held by these old homes into the spaces of the present.<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/section>\n\n  <section class=\"gs-sec\" id=\"gs-c4\">\n    <div class=\"gs-meta\"><span class=\"gs-num\">03<\/span>Archive<\/div>\n    <div>\n      <h2>\ub367\ubc29 Deotbang : Centuries in Layers<span class=\"gs-latin\">Wallpaper Archive<\/span><\/h2>\n      <p>Korea\u2019s ondol floor-heating culture gave rise to a distinctive practice called <span class=\"gs-mark\">\ub367\ubc29 (deotbang)<\/span>: applying new wallpaper directly over the old to help insulate the room against cold. Because of this practice, GOSAT\u00c9 has encountered rare historical records in which hundreds of years, from the late Joseon period to the modern era, are preserved layer upon layer like fossils.<\/p>\n      <p>If the newspapers and documents found behind the wallpaper testify to the decisive events of their time, the patterns on the front preserve the original artistry enjoyed by ordinary households. Through our own wallpaper archive, GOSAT\u00c9 systematically preserves and manages <span class=\"gs-mark\">more than 300 patterns<\/span> dating from the late Joseon period through the 1970s, documenting a forgotten chapter of Korean interior culture.<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/section>\n\n  <section class=\"gs-sec\" id=\"gs-c5\">\n    <div class=\"gs-meta\"><span class=\"gs-num\">04<\/span>Naming<\/div>\n    <div>\n      <h2>Names for the Nameless<span class=\"gs-latin\">A tribute to the Anonymous<\/span><\/h2>\n      <p>Every wallpaper discovered and restored by GOSAT\u00c9 is given a person\u2019s name. In the eras when these wallpapers were made, the ideas of \u201cdesigner\u201d or \u201cartist\u201d did not yet exist in this field, so every pattern we encounter is anonymous.<\/p>\n      <p>To honor those unnamed makers, and to remember the unknown people who once bought wallpaper from a neighborhood paper shop with the simple excitement of decorating their homes, we study the historical period of each discovery and choose a name from that era that feels most fitting for the pattern.<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/section>\n\n  <section class=\"gs-sec\" id=\"gs-c6\">\n    <div class=\"gs-meta\"><span class=\"gs-num\">05<\/span>Reproduction<\/div>\n    <div>\n      <h2>Not a Specimen, but a Living Heritage<span class=\"gs-latin\">A Continuing Legacy<\/span><\/h2>\n      <p>GOSAT\u00c9 does not treat historical wallpaper as something to be sealed away behind glass. Each pattern is carefully collected, studied, restored, and translated for contemporary interiors while preserving the character of the original surface, color, and rhythm.<\/p>\n<p>We believe heritage becomes meaningful when it can continue to live with people. The growth of GOSAT\u00c9 is directly tied to the recovery of this cultural legacy.<\/p>\n      <p>A portion of the revenue generated by GOSAT\u00c9 is reinvested into research and restoration: discovering Korean wallpapers and documenting them with care. This sustainable circle, where economic activity supports cultural preservation, is both our social responsibility and our reason for being.
